If you thought Thanksgiving was “unforgiving” to your healthy eating plan last week, wait until you see what Men’s Health magazine (via NBC Today Show site) has flagged as the “20 Worst Foods in America.”
Taken from popular casual dining chain restaurants, the meal capturing top “honors” was Outback Steakhouse’s Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing.
Ready for this…it has 2,900 calories; 182 fat grams and 240 grams of carbs. Even if you split this with a couple of dining companions, you’re still over the norm for a whole meal, according to Men’s Health.
A few others making the list:
- Worst Starter: Chili’s Awesome Blossom: 2,710 calories; 203 fat grams; 194 carb grams and (drumroll…) 6,360 mg. sodium.
- Worst Burger: Carl’s Jr. Double Six Dollar Burger: 1,520 calories and 111 fat grams.
- Worst Chinese Entree: P.F. Chang’s Pork Lo Mein: 1,820 Calories, 127 fat grams and 95 carb grams.
Perhaps the meal that personally troubled me most was the “Worst Mexican Entree,” which went to the Chipotle Mexican Grill Chicken Burrito. The numbers were:
- 1,179 calories; 47 fat grams; 125 carb grams and 2,656 mg of sodium. The good news for me is that I normally order their “Burrito Bol,” which does away with the tortilla, and I seldom add the cheese and guac as extras. Men’s Health does, fortunately, recommend the bowl version (without the tortilla and rice) as the healthier alternative. Whew.
While it’s no big surprise that these highly popular means exceed the boundaries of dietary sensibility, when you see the numbers in black and white, it almost makes you queasy…and very guilty.
